about
For those of you that don't know, I'm an elementary school music teacher that works with kinder through 5th grade students. Several years ago, we were being trained to work with a visually impaired student we were gaining for the upcoming year. I'd never had an experience like that before, so I was kinda nervous. The moment I met this little kindergarten girl, I fell in love. She was amazing. I was intrigued & amazed by her voice recognition skills. She could be walking amongst chaos in the hallway and you could get 2 syllables out of your mouth and she'd know exactly who it was. Unfortunately, she left us after that year, but I was inspired. I have no idea where she is now, but here's what came of that experience...
lyrics
CHORUS
she said, "I see you with my ears
& I hear you speakin' to me
can't rely on my eyes & sometimes
in my world, it's lonely
I do sense shadows, I cannot trust them,
& colors are foreign to me
would you be so kind
to move on & let me be"
VERSE I
her eyes wander, graspin' for something to see
hands grip anything that's within her reach
darkness takes over, makes it harder to breathe
forever left out like her life's incomplete
every step is a gamble, gotta walk in faith
hasn't felt safe since she left her Momma's place
when no one looks over her, fear is an overture
played by the symphony that's constantly consuming her
PRE-CHORUS
how can you - live your life
the way you do - without sight?
hated, frustrated, jaded, feelin' like she can't take it
...a deep breath is her cadence
CHORUS
she said, "I see you with my ears
& I hear you speakin' to me
can't rely on my eyes & sometimes
in my world, it's lonely
I do sense shadows, I cannot trust them,
& colors are foreign to me
would you be so kind
to move on & let me be"
VERSE II
Momma said, "little girl, make your way
hold your head high, work to find your place
don't be a cripple, where everyone dismisses you
it won't be simple, I'll be damned if this will limit you"
don't ask - she don't want your help
was made this way, she relies on herself
hasn't heard a genuine voice in years
eyes are good for nothin', except for the tears
PRE-CHORUS
there's no mirrors - to believe
what's beautiful - when you can't see
hated, frustrated, jaded, feelin' like she can't take it
...a deep breath is her cadence
CHORUS
she said, "I see you with my ears
& I hear you speakin' to me
can't rely on my eyes & sometimes
in my world, it's lonely
I do sense shadows, I cannot trust them,
& colors are foreign to me
would you be so kind
to move on & let me be"
she said, "I see you with my ears
& I hear you speakin' to me
can't rely on my eyes & sometimes
in my world, it's lonely
I do sense shadows, I cannot trust them,
& colors are foreign to me
would you be so kind
to move on & let me be"
