about

The summer of 2010. San Francisco. In a laundromat.
I distinctly remember writing my verse to this song during the Southern Elements Tour. Shortly after I got back to Dallas, I ended up in the studio with Penjamin Franklin. We were digging through beats & found one we both were into. I wrote a hook, then recorded it with this verse. Later, PenFrank & J Gray wrote & recorded on it. Then it just sat there, never got published. After it surfaced again years later, the recording was the basis for us doing a mini project together. I sent Stephen Goodson the beat & he reconstructed a similar vibe.

lyrics

INTRO (G O A T)
don't talk until you walk...& don't speak until you think
cause this life don't always give you what you need

VERSE I (G O A T)
starin' out the window, thinkin' 'bout my kinfolk
hearin' voices through the screen, screamin' as the wind blows
how much further will we go 'til we realize that we're alone
lovin' life, but livin' like the end's in sight when we're home,
but it ain't - make no mistake - gotta play my role & be strong
stand my ground, clear my clouds, think about how far we've gone
can't look back now, hope my parents are proud
every compliment that I get, I give to you a huge smile
couple of different ladies on my mind - feelin' guilty about it
trouble awaits me everywhere, ain't even tryin' to lie about it
...raven on my shirt, mirrored by a white bird
Novel-T, P-O-E, three6t directed me
to make the purchase, it was worth it, speakin' loudly - no words
depth through silence - curiosity killed the kitten first
sight blurred, thoughts smeared, french-kissin' a bottle of Beam
flight booked, feeling cramped, tightly gripping my dreams

CHORUS (G O A T)
don't talk until you walk, don't speak until you think
cause this life don't always give you what you need
gotta keep on searchin', gotta keep on lurkin'
gotta keep on workin', gotta keep on flourishin'
don't talk until you walk & don't speak until you think
gotta keep on searchin', gotta keep on lurkin'
gotta keep on workin', gotta keep on flourishin'

VERSE II (J Gray)
I keep my feets to the grindstone, the peace and the vibe slow
increasing the quality, but we keeping the price low
& me, I'm in my zone, so when you see your boy working
catch me in the lab with a pad & a closed curtain
for certain Mr. Killer on an instrumental
in the middle of a couple projects, a pen or pencil
in a tight grip, in a fight with my own mentals
I might be the right type when I write, but no dimples
I'm a hard work addict...minimal hint of magic
I hit a track immaculate & drop the mic & get to packing
I'm out the back with the knapsack & a wife
who understands that I'll never grow accustomed to the life
I’m a mess...I fold blunts for stress
& never tote the heat, but I'm lightin' up your chest, yeah
it's not a hollow tip, it ain't about the dollars kid
it's rolling down streets & up sleeves to work all of it

CHORUS (G O A T)

VERSE III (Penjamin Franklin)
like I'm moving close to light speed with visions of my scene
as I'm passing through life mixed with blurs of dreams
& I'm chasing my passion & rocking mics on the low key
when I need to just blast 'em, numbing they pain like it's codeine
life happens & the devil starts to intervene
facing demons on the daily, I can't let him see me weak
so the grip's tight, shoes laced, problems ready to face
as I keep the faith headstrong & watch 'em embrace
never safe from my own self, that changes today
no longer in my own hell, that problem's dead & gone away
in the league of impossible, I risk it to the edge
cause when your god-given gifted folk there is no ledge
close call, road off, safe from the crime scene
lyrics left a fingerprint, enough to make your mind think
those who don't feel it, middle finger for the time being
tight grip, can't slip, ducking from your high beams

CHORUS (G O A T)

OUTRO (G O A T)
...gotta keep on...gotta keep on
...gotta keep on...gotta keep on
