The original version of this song was released in 2013 on an album called Two Fell Swoop. J Gray & Stephen Goodson have an ongoing collaborative group called Halcyon Exchange. They invited me to be featured on the track, but it was only J Gray & I on vocals (ow.ly/YxXU30n8oa5). We always wanted to re-record this & we made room for Penjamin when we pulled the trigger on this project.
lyrics
INTRO (G O A T & J Gray)
on, on, & on
with if you say so
I heard the starting gun,
but where's this race to?
until we get it done,
we should lay low,
but I'm so underground
that I'm volcano
so turn a page, turn a phrase,
& turn it all around
...& follow me down
VERSE I (J Gray)
take it down to the basement
we be givin' the rap game a facelift
like...dead broke around uppity folk
you know we stay close to the basics
guitar cases & bass lines
in the waves of a melody
3 soulful hip-hop rockheads
minimal hit of metal please
ain't telling me nothing, backbeat I'm bustin'...disgusting
sick with a quip from the hip right quick
yeah, even when I'm dusted
with that pine scent, my minds bent
& that there sunrising's
horizon is inspiring him to use violins...right then, when it goes...
CHORUS (G O A T & J Gray)
turn a page, turn a phrase,
& turn it all around
...& follow me down
VERSE II (G O A T)
gonna warn you now, don't follow me
don't copy G & don't bother...leave
all of yall quit commenting
on, on, & on like you mocking me
from the breath I breathe to the food I eat,
seeds I plant & footprints I leave
I'll admit right now that I dig too deep
a downfall of mine, but at least I see
OCD, labeled a freak
not quite free, but I'm u...nique
I'm a rough-cut diamond, shinin', grindin',
but still stuck in debris
a nightmare in your beauty sleep
chaos is calming to me
compare it to a little Grey Goose
mixed into your green tea
CHORUS (G O A T & J Gray)
so turn a page, turn a phrase,
& turn it all around
...& follow me down
VERSE III (Penjamin Franklin)
follow me to the spaceship
let's all blast off from this ancient
& please grab all of the strange kids
no need for the complainers
my hair's thin like my patience
humans need some arranging
& let's face it, yall waited
I can't believe we all made it
now that we're here, let's praise it
make it clear, no hazy
no faking or hatin'
or what have you done for me latelys
it's all love, no breaking
hearts & minds the same wavelength
we travel time & still waste it
like the one rhyme we keep saying
CHORUS (G O A T & J Gray)
so turn a page, turn a phrase,
& turn it all around
...& follow me down
