Darkness...it has deep roots within me. I have an insane past that only my close friends know about. I don't bring it up and I hide it well. Pieces surface frequently, I struggle. At any given time, there's a violent battle going on in my head. When Double J and I began the senseless project, I told him that if I write what I feel, many of the songs will be about overcoming inner issues. This is a perfect example of it. The main point that I wanted to get across when I wrote this is described perfectly in 3 phrases:
1) It's got its hands around my throat.
2) I put my hands around its throat.
3) I keep my hands around its throat.
It expresses the fact that once something has a hold of you, you have to make a conscious decision to fight it off. Then you must keep your hands around ITS throat to keep it at bay.
PRE-VERSE I
lost in the darkness...stand up against the struggle
lost in the darkness...stand up against the struggle
stand up against the struggle...lost in the darkness
VERSE I
darkness starts in the basement, sparks when the flames hit
love is irrelevant when hatred is flagrant
your heart goes through phases, no one can change it
'tis a bit disturbing when the craziness is blatant
start the heavy drankin' - spark it up and blaze it
some even embrace the taste of a base hit
in comes the laziness, head feelin' hazed a bit
so attached to trees that they may become an ornament
CHORUS I
I don't know...who goes...all the way down that road
gettin' blown...and throwed...shouldn't be the life we leadin'
watchin' from the sidelines, I can't even find time
all this cloudiness is finally takin' over my life
...it's got its hands around my throat
PRE-VERSE II
lost in the darkness...time to make a few changes
stand up against the struggle
lost in the darkness...time to make a few changes
stand up against the struggle
lost in the darkness...time to make a few changes
time to make a few changes
VERSE II
time to make a few changes, flip it up and rearrange it
wipe off the slate, get right with the basics
find a replacement, delete some faces
outta my life, outta my sight, gotta be strong, put up a fight
wanna do right, searchin' for light, gotta ignite the flame now
can't even pick myself up off the ground to stand and stay proud
or look at myself in the mirror and say that I'm me
it's time to slap myself around and stop complaining
CHORUS II
and now...I know...who goes...down that ole' lonely road
gettin' blown and throwed and losin' all self-control
try to climb out, but I keep on drownin'
jumped up off the sidelines, finally could find time
had to clear out all the clouds and then I took back my life
...I put my hands around its throat
PRE-BRIDGE
stand up against the struggle...lost in the darkness
I put my hands around its throat
BRIDGE
lost in the darkness...my life
lost in the darkness...my life...stand up against the struggle
lost in the darkness...stand up against the struggle
time to make a few changes...my life...my life...stand up against the struggle
my life...lost in the darkness...my life
stand up against the struggle...my life
CHORUS
I know...the toll...it takes on all our souls
gotta go...toe to toe...beat it down to the ground, keep fightin'
blacked out all the white lines - yeah, this is the right time
gotta keep out all the clouds, invite the Son to my life
I keep my hands around its throat
OUTRO
it's got its hands around
I put my hands around
I keep my hands around its throat
